How to Find Copper in Subnautica 2
Last updated: May 30, 2026
In Subnautica 2, Copper is one of the most critical resources for early-game progression. Without it, you cannot craft Basic Batteries, Copper Wire, or the Fabricator itself. Unlike Titanium or Quartz, Copper does not spawn out in the open on the seabed. It is tucked inside underwater cave systems and along cliff overhangs.
If you are swimming across the sandy ocean floor looking for copper, you will not find it. You must go spelunking.

Quick Answer: How to Find Copper
- Primary Location: The cave system located directly underneath your starting Lifepod. Look for a circular hole in the seafloor.
- Secondary Location: Crevice cave systems 70 to 130 meters Southeast of the Lifepod.
- Where to Look: Attached to cave ceilings, walls, and the underside of overhangs (never on the cave floor).
- What it looks like: Small, blocky chunks with a distinct yellowish tint.

Step-by-Step Route: Cave Locations
Follow these routes from your starting Lifepod to secure your first batch of Copper.
Route 1: The Lifepod Sinkhole (Safest & Closest)
This is the easiest cave to locate and is completely safe from large predators.
- Exit your Lifepod and swim straight down to the seafloor.
- Search the ground directly beneath the Lifepod for a circular, vertical hole leading downwards.
- Dive into the hole to enter the cave system.
- Look up at the cave ceiling and upper walls. You will see several small Copper Nodes protruding from the rock.

- Tip: Use the glowing blue Oxygen Tunic plants inside the tunnels to replenish your air without returning to the surface.
Route 2: The Southeast Ravines (More Abundant)
If you have cleared out the sinkhole and need more Copper for advanced electronics:
- From your Lifepod, face Southeast (bearing ~150°-170°) and swim out about 70 to 130 meters.
- Look for rocky, vertical ridges and deep crevices slicing into the sea floor.
- Angle yourself down into these crevices. While there are some water currents flowing near the tops of these canyons, you can find quiet tunnels extending deeper.
- Examine the cave roofs. Bacterial action in these areas causes Copper to deposit mostly on cave ceilings.
Collection Methods
Copper comes in three sizes, depending on your tools and how deep you explore:
| Deposit Type | Harvesting Method | Yield | Best Stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loose Copper | Hand-pick directly from the ground | 1x Copper | Early game (rare) |
| Copper Node | Break by hand or using a tool | 3x Copper | Early game (common inside caves) |
| Large Copper Deposit | Mined with the Sonic Resonator | 5x Copper | Mid to late game (deeper biomes) |
IMPORTANT
You do not need any special tools to break standard Copper Nodes inside the starting caves. Simply swim up to them and press the interact button when the "Break Copper" prompt appears. Save the large deposits for after you craft the Sonic Resonator.
Crafting Recipes
Copper is a core ingredient in almost all early electronics.
| Crafted Item | Ingredients | Station |
|---|---|---|
| Copper Ingot | 3x Copper | Processor |
| Copper Wire | 2x Copper | Fabricator |
| Basic Battery | 2x Copper, 1x Acidic Raion Pouch | Fabricator |
| Beacon | 1x Copper, 1x Titanium | Habitat Builder |
| Fabricator | 1x Copper, 1x Titanium, 1x Quartz | Habitat Builder |

Recommended Next Steps
- Craft Copper Wire & Basic Batteries -> unlocks the Flashlight, Scanner, and Seaglide.
- Build a Beacon -> place it near your preferred cave entrance so you can return to farm Copper easily.
- Construct a Scanner Station -> once you have 1x Copper Wire and 2x Silver, build a Scanner Room and set it to scan for "Copper" to reveal all nodes in a 300m radius on your HUD.
